STEVE is a mesmerizing atmospheric optical phenomenon. First identified by aurora enthusiasts in Alberta, Canada, in 2016, it has since become a subject of scientific exploration. Through analysis of data from the European Space Agency's Swarm mission, we now know that STEVE consists of a 25-kilometer-wide ribbon of superheated plasma, soaring at an altitude of 450 kilometers with a scorching temperature of 3,000 degrees Celsius. Its rapid velocity, at 6 kilometers per second, sets it apart in the sky, although not exceptionally rare.
This stunning image was a featured photo by the researchers at the University of Calgary who were studying this phenomenon in conjunction with the European Space Agency. It has been featured by news agencies all over the world, National Geographic and there is even a print hanging on the office of the lead researcher.
